and decided we had to go into Philly for breakfast this morning! Why not? We had nothing else on the agenda for the day!
After seeing Guy review the Cream Chipped Beef on Toast served by“The Dining Car & Market” we decided that it looked so-o-o-o good, why not go taste it? By 6:30AM we were out of the house and on the road, heading east to Philly. Roads were clear, day was overcast and we were hungry. We had no problem finding the Diner, passing two very interesting looking Diners on the way to Mecca. No problem getting a seat and Jim immediately decided on the Creamed Chipped Beef, but on home fries instead of toast and with two eggs on the side. Linda had an omelet and potato pancakes. Now tell me, doesn’t Jim’s breakfast look tasty, non-fat and something to travel 95 miles for???
After breakfast we decided to head north to Cabella’s in Hamburg since Jim need new rain gear and boots for work. Now this was a mistake! Saturday at Cabella’s is like July at the Park, Christmastime at the Mall, summer at Disney, New Year’s Eve at Times Square, etc., etc., etc! Get the idea?? They have 1500 shopping carts in that store and all of them were in use! We had to walk up to people at the registers and ask if they were through with their carts ~ those carts without tents or children in them, that is! We managed to find a cart and wound our way around children and through narrow clothing aisles to the waterproof clothing section. Now you can buy rain gear any where from $139 a piece to $24.95 for a complete set! This was a real Duh!
After Jim tried on the mid-range rain suit ie. $49 a piece we decided NOT to buy the $139 a piece selection ~ $270 for something only worn when it rains and Jim happens to be at work? I don’t think so! From there, we managed to make our way back to the footwear department where Jim found rain boots and Linda found a pair of socks and a pair of gloves for Jim. We headed up to the front to check out. It took us over half an hour in line just to check out! As we got to the car, soaking wet, even with our umbrellas, we agreed that we would never, ever, ever go to Cabella’s on a weekend again, ever, ever, ever!!!
Leaving Cabella’s the next stop was south of Hamburg in Reading. Now we all know what Reading, Pennsylvania is famous for, don’t we? Yup, Outlets! Vanity Fair, to be exact! Jim took a nap while Linda headed in. . . . . and headed out about an hour or so later ~ packages in hand! It’s amazing what you can buy in a short amount of time when you have an agenda and are a determined shopper. . . . .
Rain was pouring, wind was blowing in excess of 40 miles per hour, vehicles had overturned in the median and Hwy 222 was covered with cars from various Police agencies from the area, yet still there were the idiots who thought speed limits were challenges!
Dinner before we got home seemed appealing to us so we headed east on Hwy 30 to our favorite rib joint! We felt fortunate to have found a seat in the bar at The Texas Roadhouse, with a pail of peanuts sitting on the table between us! We ended our day with Fall off the Bone spareribs for Linda and a piece of Prime Rib for Jim. We were glad to get home to comfy clothes with elastic waistbands!
Two of the sights we saw through the rain streaked windshield are recorded below ~ one an old log cabin converted into a bed and breakfast, and the other just a cold, wet scene.
. . . . so ends another road trip for the Stienstra duo ~ Jim and Linda!
